| Religions
and beliefs are not only spiritual needs, but also the
expression of multiple cultures and architecture. Around
Dasi's temples and churches the architecture presents
different styles and looks, witnessing the diversified
religions and beliefs, we can also trace back origins
to find out migration and fusion. |

Developed very early, owing to river
transportation, Dasi was once a prosperous place. Therefore,
in addition to the rustic Tudi Temple and the flamboyant ancestor
temples, there are Buddhist temples with 100 years of history.
As for the old temples, there are Puzi Temple, Jaimin Temple,
Kuanyin Temple at Lotus Seat Mountain, Fujen Temple, Jenho Temple,
etc. As Catholic and Christianity were imported to the place
later, Dasi was a town that got in touch with Western Religions
earlier than other cities. Visiting Dasi, the beauty of temples
and churches can give you a purified feeling. |

Puzi Temple, established in 1905, it was originally
a privately owned temple. Owing to its good deeds to the people,
persuading people to live a pious life, it had more and more
believers. When the small place was not enough to accommodate
the growing number of believers, they donated enough money to
buy the land and build the temple we now have. Then the privately
owned temple became a public worshipping place. In 1917, a worshipping
pavilion was added to the main building, completing the construction
of the entire temple. In 1961, as the temple was damaged by
the weather and ruined in time, people rebuilt it. The construction
work was completed in 1965. In 1908, the believers refurbished
the temple once again. Puzi Temple worships Sanshang Enchu -
|
| Kuansangtijun, Fuyouxienju, and Jiutienximin.
On both sides, there are the King of Yenping County and Wenchang
Tijun. On June 24 of the lunar calendar, the birthday of Kuanshang
Tijun, the pompous parade and temple fair are still the venue
of the place. |

Fujen Temple was built in 1813. In 1861, Lin
Ben-Yuan's family donated the land to extend it. The temple
mainly worshipped Tienshang Shangmu, in order to request the
ships safety. Later, it further worshipped Sankian Dati, Xuantan
Yuanxuai, and other gods, becoming the religious, self-governing,
and social welfare center of the place. In 1981, it finished
its reconstruction work. Covering an area of 300 pings, it is
a bigger scale temple at Dasi; therefore, people also call it
Damiao (Big Temple).
Fujen Temple worships Kaichang Shangwang, Sanshan Kuowang, Dinggung
Ancient Buddha, Baosheng Dati, Tienshang Shangmu, Jushang Niangniang,
Citao Niangnaing, Jiaoshang Xienxi, Zhaixenye, etc. In February
10 at each lunar |
| year, it is the birthday of
Kaichang Shangwang. Dasi people follow the traditional
etiquette, requesting big families to present huge pigs
in turn to worship the god. On the eve of Kaichang Shangwang's
birthday, they invite a specialist to slaughter and clean
the pigs presented by the believers. Then the pigs will
be placed on the parade car, ready for driving through
the happy streets of Dasi. The next morning, the temple
will strike the gongs. Townsfolk will present the pigs
as the parade progresses to the temple. In front of the
temple, then, the pigs will be arranged in order, ready
for the worship. Under the accompaniment of the northern
winds instrument, the worship will last until noon. As
the temple fair ends, the townsfolk would prepare feasts
in front of their houses for |

| their friend and relatives from foreign lands,
to celebrate. Further, they also slice the pork and present
it to their neighbors. |

Zaiming Temple was built in 1860, a private temple owned by
A-Jia Li, after he took an oath as a monk. Later, more believers
flocked to his temple. In 1873, cooperating with the local gentry,
the abbot, Pu-Xi Huang raised funds to rebuild the temple. In
1912, the temple was further extended, especially the main hall
and the wing chambers. A grand ceremony was held to celebrate
such a venue. Zaiming Temple mainly worships Kuanyin bodhisattva
in the main hall, with Dizanwang Buddha,
|
 |
| Jintung and Yunui, Noja Tazi,
Weidou Buddha, Wuxienlinkuan Dati on the right. Occupying
the area of three jia, trees and grasses grow around the
temple, giving a fresh and tranquil feeling. Being the
oldest temple at Dasi, there are collections of rare editions
of Buddhist script printed in the Song Dynasty and high
monk's calligraphy. Originally it was a three-winged mansion,
a main hall with two side wings. Later, people added two
more side wings to the main hall, making it a three-winged
temple architecture. With Zen elegance and tranquility,
there are camellias at the back. During autumn and winter,
when the camellias bloom, it gives a stunning scene. At
the side of the temple, there is a stone plate path (Zaimin
Temple Archaic Path) leading you to the corn garden at
the |

| bottom of the hill. Then, it takes
you further to the mouth of Dahan Stream. Along the path, the
scenery is fabulous, being one of the Eight Spectacular Scenes
at Dasi - "Kanjin Returning Sail." |

Kuanyin Temple at Lotus Seat Mountain was built
in 1801. In 1835, 1904, and 1925, there were some minor repairs.
In 1934, people changed the worship pavilion into Xieshanzhungzhan
Worship Pavilion, which has not been repaired until now. Kuanyin
Temple at Lotus Seat Mountain mainly worships Kuanyin bodhisattva,
18 Lohan Jinzhun and Peiji Sankuan Dati. The temple is sitated
to the southeast, with the northwest at its back; it is a kind
of single entrance temple. Limited to geographical location,
it is impossible to develop the temple in length. Likewise,
it becomes an unusual temple with five gates and a single hall.
The temple's flying roof is lofty, with pines and cypress in
the courtyard, giving a tranquil atmosphere. The roof is double
layered, of three ridges, inlaid with Eight

| Diagram paintings. In the temple,
the paintings on the wall are lively, with vivacious mud
statues. Further, the woodcarvings, stone carvings, and
color paintings are elegant and refined in nature. In
front of the main hall, there is a worship square, whose
refined architecture, painted and engraved stays and columns
are the major attractions of the Kuanyin temple. As Kuyin
Temple's geographical location is excellent, many scholars
and writers expressed their feeling with poems on |
|

| the columns after visiting
such a nice place. Being one of Eight Spectacular Scenes at
Dasi, it is called "Dawn Bell at Lotus Temple." Further,
this temple is also the religious center of the Hakkanese people
living in Tao-Ju-Miao area. On February 19 of the Lunar calendar
each year, it is Kuanyin's Birthday. At the venue, many pilgrims
visit the place and worship the goddess, as a spectacular scene
in its own right. |

The Presbyterian Church of Dasi was established
in 1889, when Dr. Mackay brought Evangelism to the area. On
the Old Streets, near Hoping Road, he established a church for
gathering and spread God's message. In 1993, with the donations
of the believers and the local people, they purchased a piece
of land on Puzi Road. In 1997, they built a new church with
5 storeys above- and 1 storey under-ground. The church is gothic
in design, with pointed parapets. Blending with the red bricks
outer wall, it makes the church an architectural attraction
in Dasi, adding foreign taste to the old town. From the church,
you can have a full view of Dahan Stream.

Saint Franciscan Catholic Church was built in
1953 by Bishop Lan. It is an early Catholic church in Taoyuan,
serving as a monastery for the friar and brother that took a
one-year course. Outside the church, willows line along the
road, giving elegance to the church other than the green. In
the middle of the courtyard, a statue of Saint Francis is erected
there. At the back of the church, there is a basketball court
and a big area of green trees. The simplicity and tranquility
of the church make it rise above the noisy surrounding and make
it a holy place. In |
 |
1950s, the Communist Party overthrew the National
Government and occupied China, many catholic priests migrated
to Dasi because of their love of Chinese people. At that time,
there were not more than ten catholic priests, mainly living
in Tamsui, Kaoshiung, Pingtung, etc. Therefore, Saint Francis
Catholic Church at Dasi deserves a place in history because
of its Evangelism in Taiwan.
